The Sloan Digital Sky Survey CD-ROM

System requirements:
-- Any computer with a CD-ROM drive
-- A WWW browser that supports tables. Java/ActiveX support is not
required. A graphics capable browser is suggested.
-- A Postscript viewer is suggested but not necessary
-- An Internet connection may be handy for some external links
Instructions:
Windows-95:
-- Insert the CD
-- Start your favorite WWW browser
-- Open file 'E:\Welcome.htm' (where 'E:' is the drive letter of your
CD-ROM drive)
Mac/OS
-- Insert the CD
-- Start your favorite WWW browser
-- Open file 'WELCOME.HTM' in the 'SDSS' folder
Digital Unix:
-- Insert the CD-ROM
-- mount it as 'mount -r -t cdfs -o noversion /dev/rz4c /mnt'
where 'rz4' is your CD-ROM drive (SCSI bus 0, target 4, LUN 0)
and '/mnt' is an arbitrary empty directory. You have to be root
to mount the CD. Contact your system administrator if you want
to mount the disk as an ordinary user.

directory. You have to be root to mount the CD. Contact your system
administrator if you want to mount the disk as an ordinary user.

Solaris (2.x)
-- Insert the CD-ROM -- if you are running the 'Volume Management'
(vold) the CD will be mounted under '/cdrom/sdss'
-- If you are not running vold, mount the CD as
'mount -r -F hsfs /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2 /mnt' where '/dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2'
is your CD-ROM drive and '/mnt' is an arbitrary empty
directory. You have to be root to mount the CD. Contact your system
administrator if you want to mount the disk as an ordinary user.

Linux
-- Insert the CD-ROM

where '/dev/cdrom' is your CD-ROM drive (normally you set up
a symbolic link pointing to the drive during installation)
and '/mnt' is an arbitrary empty directory. You may have to be root
to mount the CD. Contact your system administrator if you want
to mount the disk as an ordinary user.

Other platforms
The CD is written in vanilla ISO-9660 format. You have to mount it
and open 'welcome.htm' with your favorite browser. All references
are lower case with no version number. If your OS is case sensitive,
mount the CD so that file names are lower case and version numbers
are ignored. All internal references are relative.
